Dining out in Bali: The Warung
Eating out in Bali is always
cheap by Western standards, but the street stalls or Warungs are always
the cheapest option and we eat at these little roadside restaurants all
the time.
A warung is a type of small
family owned business - often a casual, usually outdoor restaurant (or
convenience store). You'll find all the typical Indonesian foods here,
such as Nasi Goreng, Mie Goreng and Cap Cay. Warungs offer a cheap place
to eat where the food is tasty, the staff are friendly and you don't have
to dress up! If you're bored of eating out in restaurants all the time
but don't want to cook, Warungs are a great place to eat and it will only
cost you a few thousand Rupiah. |

| Our favourite
places to eat are:
Warung Parma, Kuta
- they do the best banana milkshakes! Situated between Poppies 1 and 2,
Warung Parma serves all kinds of international cuisine, from Chinese and
Indonesian to Holland and Italian Food. We don't know how they do it, but
every single dish on their extensive menu is brilliant and great value
for money.
Suzuke Warung, Balangan
-
My favourite beach on the island, Balangan is a real beach with beautiful
sand, palm trees, sun loungers, reef, rock pools and great surf. And what's
more it has a brilliant Warung with the best Nasi Goreng. Screams can be
heard from surfers having lime juice rubbed into their wounds in the rooms,
but don't let that put you off as the food is wonderful! It's like a real
family Warung, the people are friendly and there's always cool people staying
there. You can take what you like from the drinks coolers and just pay
at the end of the day.
Pak Malen, Sunset Road
- Babi Guling Warungs sell roasted pork and they use the whole pig to make
different dishes, which can be VERY spicy yet delicious. At Pak Malen they
give you pork scratchings, roasted pork meat, green chillis, crackling
and pork satay and wrap it in a coconut leaf and paper. It's so spicy though
you'll be reaching for the water!
Warung Ocha, Seminyak
- At Warung Ocha all the buffet food is in a display cabinet, so you just
point at the things you want and eat in or take-away. Dishes include roast
chicken and potatoes, vegetables, omelette and noodles. They have wireless
internet too so it's great if you want to get a snack and do some work.
